Music by Loretta Chacon with Sean Johnson; Lyrics by Loretta Chacon
"Copper Pit Miner" is about the life of a miner, specifically my great uncle, Juan Chacon. He was the leader of the union and a civil rights activist.
Goin’ into that ole’ mine shaft, bright of day.
Wouldn’t know the sun was shinin,’
In this gaping hole.
Dust I breathe makes me ill.
Gotta get some air somewhere, somehow.
Refrain
All this digging is makin’ me ill.
All this digging is makin’ me ill.
Gotta get some healin.’
I have the will.
Chorus
Some say you gotta love what you do.
Can’t say that I do.
But it’s the fabric of who I am.
Never known another life.
But of a copper pit miner.
It’s a hard life to lead.
Only way I know how.
Got a wife & kids, another comin’ this fall.
They don’t know this job is killin’ me.
Oh, oh it’s making me bleed.
Crack of dawn over juniper trees.
Bayard, New Mexico.
Thank El Senor, I’m getting’ up this morn’.
Little woman put a pot of coffee on.
Sugar & creamer, if you please.
Headed down dirt road.
Eating pan dulce.
Thermos of coffee between my legs.
Simple pleasures of life before the toil.
Oh, oh this moment makes me smile.
Never known another life.
But of a copper pit miner.
