"Hearts Reaching to the Sky," is about taking a leap of faith and fighting for what you believe in. It is written through the voice of my great aunt, Virginia Chacon, a pre-feminist thinker and pioneer.
When the miners received a court injunction forbidding them to strike, the women suggested that they take their places on the picket line. During the union meeting, the women stood together, voted and passed the motion.
The women marched for 15 long months. Even after being jailed and persecuted, they eventually won the strike!
Oh, you’re not gonna drag me down.
Not gonna let you, this time around.
Oh, we’re goin’ down to the picket line.
Gonna stand up for our rights.
Chorus
So, you say our husbands can’t go out to the line.
Well, we, women will be out there all the time.
You can watch us from the other side of the fence.
We’ll hold our heads high.
Our hearts reaching to the sky!
You can threaten me with all of your cunning.
You can act like you really don’t care.
But I know you need us to keep profits growing.
Just treat us fair.
Chorus
Well, I’m gonna tell ya somethin’ ‘bout the picket line.
There is strength & conviction in women all the time.
Civil rights need to be protected,
Out there on the picket line.
Chorus
